Sedona AZ (April 8, 2014) – If you live in Sedona, you soon will be a part-owner of a beautiful new piece of outdoor sculpture, called “The Open Gate” created by Reagan Word. Within a year you will be able to view it with pride every time you drive through the roundabout at Schnebly Hill Road in Sedona.
This piece was selected as the winner of a public art contest that attracted many entries. They were narrowed down to three finalists, which were displayed at the Sedona Public Library and City Hall. Viewers submitted 283 votes, and 1,385 opinions were submitted to the City’s website. Recently, the City of Sedona Art Selection Work Group unanimously named “The Open Gate” as the winner.

You can do so at the first Lunch & Learn program of the Spring term at OLLI (the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute) Wednesday, April 9, from 12:30 – 2:00 in room 34 of Yavapai College’s Sedona campus (on Cultural Park Road, across Rte 89A from Red Rock High School).
Everyone is welcome and admission is free. Bring your lunch (or come for complimentary coffee, tea, water, and a light snack) and join in informal conversation at 12:30, or come at 1:00 when the program will begin.
Besides sculpture, Mr. Word also creates paintings and illustrations. His watercolor paintings, done with a drybrush technique, often depict wildlife and western scenes in vivid detail. He has illustrated five children’s books, including Alice in Pastaland, which has been translated into Korean and Chinese. In addition, he continues his lifelong professional practice of architectural illustration and design.
OLLI is a local, volunteer, peer-to-peer, adult education program, offering over 100 learning groups and workshops each term for a a nominal fee.
