Sedona, AZ — The Jewish Community of Sedona and the Verde Valley, located at 100 Meadowlark Drive off Route 179 in Sedona, is a welcoming, egalitarian, inclusive congregation dedicated to building a link from the past to the future by providing religious, educational, social and cultural experiences.
The JCSVV offers soul-enriching services, programs, and classes, all listed on the synagogue website, jcsvv.org. Office telephone: 928 204-1286. Visitors are welcome to attend services after a security check. Those who cannot attend in person can access the service through zoom.
Rabbi Magal will lead Friday evening services on October 3 at 7:00 pm. Note: The First Friday services are at a later start time, rather than the 5:30 start time for the other Friday evening services the rest of the month. The Torah service includes a reading from the weekly portion Haazinu (Deuteronomy 32: 1-52), the farewell song of Moses, a hymn of joy to God with the Promised Land on the horizon. The service will include songs to usher in the Sabbath, prayers of healing for loved ones, and Kaddish, the Mourner’s prayer in memory of those who have passed away recently or around this date in past years. Kiddush and Motzi (blessings over the wine/juice and sweet round challah symbolizing the fullness and continuity of the new year 5786 just begun) and socializing follow the service.
The Festival of Sukkot begins on Monday evening, October 6. Our Supper in the Sukkah is scheduled for Thursday, October 9 at 4:30 pm with a full kosher dinner sponsored by Joe Berger. All are invited. Feel free to pass by during the week to fulfill the mitzvah of sitting in the Sukkah and eating a snack there, saying the blessings over the Lulav and Etrog (four species of plants- palm, myrtle, willow, and citron). The Festival of Sukkot is a time of expressing gratitude for the bounty of our “harvest” – not necessarily agricultural produce as in ancient times – but rather to show our appreciation for the gifts in our life. The Sukkah, a temporary dwelling is decorated with fruits, pictures of the produce of the Land of Israel, and drawings representing the Patriarchs and Matriarchs of the Bible who are Ushpizin: “invited” in spirit, along with our own loved ones, into this cozy dwelling.
There will be morning Minyan held on Wednesday, October 8, at 8:30 am as well as meditation that afternoon at 4:00 pm. However, Torah study will not meet on Thursday, October 9, because of the Supper in the Sukkah event.
The Social Action Committee is collecting non-perishable foods, as well as infant formula and feminine hygiene products, for the local Sedona food pantry. During the High Holy Days the collection bin is located in the synagogue lobby.
We wish all our members, guests, and neighbors a sense of wholeness and peace, included in the word Shalom.
