… I love the shot of the Great Blue Heron cruising across the water and the reflections from the surface reflect up onto his wings and body creating new and wonderful patterns of light and shadow. Below we have a Western Grebe that has just secured a bit of breakfast … next is to get it flipped so he can swallow it headfirst … and then go for more.
Below the Grebe is a photo of the most beautiful opal I have ever cut, and I have been cutting opal for forty-seven years. The opal is a piece of black crystal opal that I cut around thirty years ago and made into a pendant for Corky … the photo as seen in this email is the size it is in real life, but if you click on it, the image will be much larger. The gem opal weighs 29.92 carats and the rough that I cut it from hid much of the final beauty that I got out of the piece. Maybe I’ll be lucky enough to find another like it, but the odds are about the same as winning Power Ball and Mega Millions in the same week. This one stays in the family. What a privilege to cut a remarkable stone like this.
Preparing a talk for five junior high school classes on Wednesday … the subject will be on opal and other gem materials … what they are, where they are found, how they are mined, worked and end up in jewelry or collections private and public. I feel very challenged … how do I make it interesting to kids in 7th and 8th grades? We’ll find out!
Into a new day and a new week … so far so good … still breathing, smiling and looking forward to living the rest of the day … it will be good … my choice!
Smiles,
Ted
