Acclaimed new independent films make Sedona premiere at Mary D. Fisher Theatre
Sedona AZ (December 23, 2014) – The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to present the Northern Arizona premieres of the new award-winning independent films “She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry” and “Flamenco, Flamenco” showing Jan. 2-7 at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre.
SHE’S BEAUTIFUL WHEN SHE’S ANGRY
“She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry”is a provocative and rousing look at the birth of the women’s liberation movement in the late 1960’s. The film offers a unique focus on local and lesser-known activists, including the Boston authors of Our Bodies, Ourselves, the Chicago Women’s Liberation Union, and grassroots organizations across the country, using never-seen before archival footage, great music from the period and artful re-enactments.
“She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry”depicts the early days of the National Organization for Women (NOW) when ladies wore hats and gloves. At the same time, young women, frustrated with their second-class status in civil rights and peace groups, started a new movement called women’s liberation. They proclaimed that “the personal is political,” and demanded sexual equality in every part of daily life. Featuring interviews with early feminists Kate Millett, Fran Beal, Rita Mae Brown and many others, “She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry” shows women fighting back with humor, sometimes with fury – daring to be “bad.”
“She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry” reveals a wide-reaching movement with women’s rock bands, poetry readings, and “zaps,” impromptu protest actions. The film is a grassroots view of the movement, rather than focusing on the most famous, or the “firsts” and celebrates the “worker bees” of the women’s movement, and collective organizing, rather than heroic individuals. It does not shy away from controversies over race, sexual preference and leadership that arose in the women’s movement, and brilliantly captures the spirit of the time — thrilling, scandalous, and often hilarious.
“She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry” will be shown at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre Jan. 2-7. Showtimes will be 4 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 2-3; and 7 p.m. on Sunday, Monday and Wednesday, Jan. 4, 5 and 7.
FLAMENCO, FLAMENCO
“Flamenco, Flamenco” is a celebration of one of the world’s most beautiful, stunning and awe-inspiring art forms: Flamenco.
“Flamenco, Flamenco” comes alive through a journey of light and movement and brings to life the evolution of the songs, dances and music of Flamenco that many consider to be the heritage of the universe.
The film shows that there is a powerful new Flamenco, featuring young talents finding their way in Spain and beyond its borders. The film also features some of the great living masters that of Flamenco that still remain in Spain.
This beautifully photographed documentary is Spanish-filmmaker Carlos Saura’s tribute to the beauty and diversity of Spain’s national dance. Using only the minimalist setting of an abandoned Seville train station and the costumes of more than 300 performers, this is a veritable feast of exciting flamenco dances, songs, and guitar playing. Some of the better known artists include Paco de Lucia, Manolo Sanlucar, and Lole Manuel. The film features little dialogue, relying instead on visual pageantry, music and costumes.
“Flamenco, Flamenco” will be shown at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre Jan. 2-7. Showtimes will be 7 p.m. on Friday and Tuesday, Jan. 2 and 6; and 4 p.m. on Sunday, Monday and Wednesday, Jan. 4, 5 and 7.
