Acclaimed new independent films make Sedona premiere at Mary D. Fisher Theatre
Sedona AZ (September 4, 2014) – The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to present the Northern Arizona premieres of the acclaimed new award-winning independent films “The Last of Robin Hood” and “The Trip to Italy” showing Sept. 12-16 at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre.
THE LAST OF ROBIN HOOD
An all-star ensemble cast is featured in “The Last of Robin Hood”, including Academy Award-winners Kevin Kline and Susan Sarandon, as well as Dakota Fanning.
Errol Flynn (Kevin Kline), the swashbuckling Hollywood star and notorious ladies man, flouted convention all his life, but never more brazenly than in his last years when, swimming in vodka and unwilling to face his mortality, he undertook a liaison with an aspiring actress, Beverly Aadland (Dakota Fanning).
The two had a high-flying affair that spanned the globe and was enabled by the girl’s fame-obsessed mother, Florence (Susan Sarandon). It all came crashing to an end in October 1959, when events forced the relationship into the open, sparking an avalanche of publicity castigating Beverly and her mother — which only fed Florence’s need to stay in the spotlight.
“The Last of Robin Hood” is a story about the desire for fame and the price it exacts.
Renowned critic Rex Reed raves “a mesmerizing, king-size performance by Kevin Kline as Errol Flynn!”
“The Last of Robin Hood” will be shown at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre Sept. 12-16. Showtimes will be 4 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 12-13; and 7 p.m. on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 14-16.
THE TRIP TO ITALY
“The Trip to Italy” is playing to rave reviews by critics and audiences around the country. Entertainment Weekly calls the film “brilliantly funny, hilarious and touching”. Variety calls it “highly entertaining” while Time Out New York refers to it as “an essential comedy’. The Hollywood Reporter says, “Brilliant! ‘The Trip to Italy’ is the ‘Godfather 2’ of road movies!”
Michael Winterbottom’s largely improvised 2010 film, “The Trip”, took comedians Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon — or semi-fictionalized versions thereof — on a restaurant tour around northern England. In this witty and incisive follow-up, Winterbottom reunites the pair for a new culinary road trip, retracing the steps of the Romantic poets’ grand tour of Italy and indulging in some sparkling banter and impersonation-offs. Rewhetting our palates from the earlier film, the characters enjoy mouth-watering meals in gorgeous settings from Liguria to Capri while riffing on subjects as varied as Batman’s vocal register, the artistic merits of “Jagged Little Pill,” and, of course, the virtue of sequels.
Winterbottom trains his camera to capture the idyllic Italian landscape and the gastronomic treasures being prepared and consumed while keeping the film centered on the crackling chemistry between the two leads. “The Trip to Italy” effortlessly melds the brilliant comic interplay between Coogan and Brydon into quieter moments of self-reflection, letting audiences into their insightful ruminations on the nuances of friendship and the juggling of family and career. The result is a biting portrait of modern-day masculinity.
“The Trip to Italy” will be shown at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre Sept. 12-16. Showtimes will be 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 12-13; and 4 p.m. on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 14-16.
