Sedona News – Recently, students of Deb Sanders’ 5th Grade class at West Sedona
School suggested an important criterion for the selection of Sedona’s
Sister City….a dark skies commitment.
The two fifth grade classes recently completed a STEM Community
project on Sedona’s light pollution. Their final project, after studying
about the importance of maintaining Sedona’s Dark Skies designation,
was to create prototypes of code acceptable outdoor light fixtures. On
hearing about Sedona’s search for a sister city, the students invited
Don Groves, Sister Cities Board member, to hear their recommendation
of a dark skies criterion.
“ I really enjoyed the 5th grade representatives and their detailed slide
presentation of why our Sister City should have at least a Dark Skies
focus if not be an actual certified Dark Skies Community, Groves
commented. We will discuss this recommendation at the June 7, Sister
City orientation meeting which will be held at Sedona’s City Hall, Vultee
meeting room at 4 pm.”
