Prescott AZ (August 18, 2020) – Yavapai College has been awarded a U.S. Department of Education TRIO grant in the amount of $2,417,615.00. This five-year award will support the continuation of the Student Support Services Program at Yavapai College (SSS), supporting more than 300 students annually.
SSS provides comprehensive academic support services to students who are first-generation and low-income in addition to students with disabilities. This support includes assistance with postsecondary course selection; applying for financial aid, scholarships, and veterans’ educational benefits; direct financial assistance through Grant Aid Scholarships; and transfer planning.
“We are thrilled to receive the SSS renewal award from the Department of Education and to have this honor to serve students for another five-year cycle,” said District Director of TRIO Programs and Veterans Education and Transfer Services at Yavapai College, Jane Hersh.
“As a first-generation college student myself, it is absolutely rewarding to see our SSS students flourish and accomplish their educational dreams despite the barriers they have had to endure coming from challenging backgrounds.”
The YC SSS program also provides tutoring, peer mentoring, student success workshops, cultural learning enrichment, leadership development, and financial literacy education. Services are tailored to meet the individualized needs of each participant and helps them identify and follow efficient pathways to graduation with a degree or certificate at YC or transfer to a university.
“Be assured that the SSS students do all the required work it takes to accomplish their individual goals,” Hersh said. “Our role is dedicated to supporting them along their individual paths. TRIO programs promote educational equity, prizes diversity, and strives to include students from varied backgrounds.”
