Sedona, AZ - In what has become an annual
tradition, many of Sedona's art galleries christened the
New Year by staying open late the first Friday, Feb 1st from
5-8pm to celebrate "Art in the Raw" month.
The Goldenstein Gallery at 390 N. Hwy 89A was no exception,
inviting art lovers to "Body Language," a group art
exhibition of classical sculpted, life drawn, fine art photography,
and multi media nudes. The exhibit lasts through February
29th.
Local entrepreneur and fine art photographer, Joel Gilgoff,
was on hand to display his modern photographic interpretations of
the female form. Gilgoff
debuted his most recent creation, the classic risque “French Postcard.”

Jerome artist Dave Rentz was also in
attendance, displaying both his
art work, and playing a musical performance
along with artist LauRha Frankfort. Mr. Rentz considers himself a professor of “dotology”
because he covers his scrap metal sculptures with small dots of
paint that create an energy that brings them to life.

As a
musician specializing in drums, Rentz infuses rhythm into his art
work. “I love playing. I also love honoring things that have been
cast off. I just start
with one dot and that leads to another and another. It’s all
improvisation.”

Conspicuous in its size was a larger than life
sculpture by well known local art master and teacher,
John Waddell, who made news last year when his famous
"Gathering" group sculptures were stolen outside his
Cornville home. Mr. Waddell and his wife, Ruth,
made a surprise appearance to support their friend, Dave
Rentz.
The sculpture on exhibit at the Goldenstein Gallery was none other
than that of Dave Rentz, who posed for Waddell more than 20
years ago, and whose "Dave" was part of "Gathering," one of three groups
of sculptures that comprised
Waddell's larger art work "Generation."
As a surprise for Mr. Rentz, Mr. Waddell brought his recast
"Dave" to the Goldenstein Gallery's opening
of "Body Language."

Said Ruth Waddell, "Back in the 80's, Dave used to ride his bike from
Jerome to pose for the sculpture. He was playing drums at the
time and the combination of holding the drum between his legs while
he played, and riding his bike
back and forth to Jerome, made his legs huge!" This
presumably made him an excellent nude male model.
