Sedona Film Festival presents Arizona premiere of "Two Lovers" at Second Tuesday

Joaquin Phoenix, Gwyneth Paltrow and Isabella Rossellini star in Jan. 13 drama

SEDONA, AZ - Jan 5, 2009 - The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to present the Arizona Premiere of “Two Lovers” at the January installment of the Second Tuesday Cinema Series. There will be two screenings of the film at 4:00 and 7:00 p.m. on Jan. 13 at Harkins Sedona Six Theatres.

A Brooklyn-set romantic drama about a bachelor torn between the family friend his parents wish he would marry and his beautiful but volatile new neighbor. “Two Lovers” stars Academy Award-winner Gwyneth Paltrow and Oscar nominee Joaquin Phoenix and features Isabella Rossellini, Vinessa Shaw and Moni Moshonov. Steven Zeitchik from The Hollywood Reporter lauds the film as “the best American drama of the year.”

“This stellar ensemble cast plus a solid script and direction by James Gray makes ‘Two Lovers’ the perfect film to kick off our new year of cinema series events,” said film festival director Patrick Schweiss. “And we are getting to see the film one full month before its U.S. theatrical release in New York and Los Angeles.”

Set in the insular world of Brighton Beach, Brooklyn, “Two Lovers” is a classic romantic drama, with Joaquin Phoenix giving a raw and vulnerable performance as Leonard, a charismatic but troubled young man who moves back into his childhood home following a recent heartbreak.

While recovering under the watchful eye of his parents (Isabella Rossellini and Moni Monoshov), Leonard meets two women in quick succession: Michelle (Gwyneth Paltrow), a mysterious and beautiful neighbor who is exotic and out-of-place in Leonard's staid world, and Sandra, the lovely and caring daughter of a businessman who is buying out his family's dry-cleaning business.

Leonard becomes deeply infatuated by Michelle, who seems poised to fall for him, but is having a self-destructive affair with a married man. At the same time, mounting pressure from his family pushes him towards committing to Sandra.

Leonard is forced to make an impossible decision – between the impetuousness of desire and the comfort of love – or risk falling back into the darkness that nearly killed him.

“Two Lovers” was written and directed by James Gray, who made his directorial debut at the age of 25 with Little Odessa, a critically-acclaimed crime drama that received the Critics Award at the Deauville Film Festival as well as the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival. That same year, he received nominations from the Independent Spirit Awards for Best First Feature and Best First Screenplay. In 2000, Gray wrote and directed his second film for Miramax, “The Yards”, which was selected for official competition at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival. “We Own the Night” found writer/director Gray working with Joaquin Phoenix, Eva Mendes and Robert Duvall, and played to critical and audience acclaim. “We Own the Night” was selected for official competition at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival and earned Gray the Golden Palm award for direction.

In 2006, Joaquin Phoenix was hailed for his mesmerizing performance as Johnny Cash in “Walk the Line”. For this role, he collected his second Academy Award nomination (this time, as Best Actor) and won the Golden Globe as Best Actor in a Musical. His first Oscar nomination came for Best Supporting Actor in Ridley Scott’s Oscar-winning Best Picture, “Gladiator”.

Gwyneth Paltrow’s credit list features critically acclaimed independent films and studio blockbusters that have made her a fixture for today’s audience. Her stunning performance in Shakespeare In Love catapulted her into awards stardom with Best Actress honors at the Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild Awards, and Academy Awards.

The title sponsor for the event is SedonaFit. The lodging host is Amara Hotel, Restaurant & Spa. The series is also made possible by a grant from the Arizona Commission on the Arts and National Endowment for the Arts and the City of Sedona.

The film will be shown at Harkins Sedona Six Theatres on Tuesday, Jan. 13 at 4:00 and 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $10, or $8 for Film Sedona members, and will be available starting at 3:00 p.m. in the Harkins lobby. Cash or checks only. Seats are limited. Film Sedona members can purchase tickets in advance at the Sedona International Film Festival office, 1785 W. Hwy. 89A, Suite 2B, or by calling 282-1177.
