Chris Yaxley

Sucked into Sedona's Vortex

By A.M. Melfa | Sedona.biz

Sedona, AZ -- On July 20, 2006, Chris Yaxley landed in Sedona, Arizona from England.  Although experiencing its annual monsoon season, to Chris the Sedona weather seemed arid in comparison to the intense humidity of Britain in high summer.

On Monday, July 24th, guitar slung over his shoulder, Chris strolled in to Open Mic Night at the Oak Creek Brewing Company and played a set which blew the local crowd right out of the proverbial water.

Slightly disjointed melodies blended with Chris' raw vocals immediately had all ears pricked up, much like an animal that senses something unusual in its normally predictable environment.  By the end of his set, MC, Keith Martini,, asked Chris to stop by the studio at Sedona Books and Music for a recording session.

Chris was using this time in Sedona to recuperate from the stresses of big city London living and its overwhelming music scene. Says Chris "In London getting recognized as a musician is more about who you know than what you know."  That's why the audience reaction to his music at the Brewery and the ensuing recording offer was a welcome change for Chris.

Chris plays heavenly music

Chris' current musical project, Universal Straight Circle, is the latest incarnation of his ongoing partnership with Jack Carrack, drummer, and Anneka Warburton, bassist.  Universal Straight Circle's music, grounded in the Grunge sound made popular by bands such as Nirvana and the Smashing Pumpkins of Seattle in the 1990's forms a basis for their sound. Add in some classical Spanish, jazz fusion and funk influences, and you have the  ingredients for the band's overall sound.

"More recent elements include electronic looping as well as Eastern Indian musical arrangements" says Chris, who also acts as the engineer and producer on most of the band's recorded work.

The cuts on the band's Universal Straight Circle website "Feet in Hands" and "River", were produced by Chris and recorded in England with band mates Jack and Anneka. The track aptly entitled "Vomit", spews out unbridled energy on a wave of punk riffs, and was recorded here in Sedona with the instrumental and engineering assistance of Keith Martini.

In a review of the 2005 demo, "I for an Eye," released under the band's previous incarnation known as "Blank Canvas," writer Mike Spall of the on line publication "Southscene," covering the music of London's South Side, states "It is like nothing I've ever heard before...unpredictable but infectious." Read Southscene Review.

Having already described Chris' infectious musical style let's investigate his unpredictable side.  After spending only a few days in Sedona Chris made the impulsive decision to turn his ten day vacation in to an extended stay, much to the chagrin of his band mates, friends and family.

Encouraged by the local response to his music, and rather frazzled by the party scene in London, Chris views Sedona as a place of personal rejuvenation. He supports his decision to stay in Sedona by stating "I hope I can bring some of the focus and energy I've found here in Sedona back to London with me."

Chris Yaxley

That focus and energy can be witnessed as Chris plays his own set and jams with other musicians at the Oak Creek Brewing Company's Open Mic Night each Monday night from 8pm to close. You may find Chris out front at the mic, singing and strumming one of his dynamic compositions, or perhaps tucked back behind the drum kit free forming with the talented array of local musicians who show up on a regular basis to grace the patrons with a night of free entertainment.

Stop by to meet Chris Yaxley, another visitor sucked in to Sedona's energy vortexes. Bring along your guitar, your voice, or just your feet to tap and your hands to clap in time.

Who knows, maybe one day in the not too distant future you may see the faces of your children, wide eyed and mouths agape, as you relate the story of having heard Chris Yaxley perform live in Sedona "back in the day."
