Mayoral candidate Matthew Turner discusses
lights along 89A in YouTube video
By Carl Jackson | Sedona.biz
Sedona, AZ - In June 2007, a large contingent of concerned
citizens converged on Sedona's City Hall to show their opposition to a
proposal by the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) to
install 76 light poles on Hwy 89A in West Sedona in response to pedestrian
accidents along the dark stretch of highway.
The citizens, along with local environmental groups and
astronomers, objected to ADOT's plan to use "high sodium" lights
that would negatively impact Sedona's dark starry sky.
A Highway 89A Safety Advisory Committee was
eventually formed to develop possible alternative solutions to
ADOT's plan. The Committee consists of 3 Sedona residents, 5
ADOT representatives, 3 City of Sedona staffers, Sedona Police
Chief, Joe Vernier, Sedona Fire Chief, Matt Shobert, the Executive
Director of the Sedona Chamber of Commerce, Jennifer Wesselhoff, and
2 representatives of the International Dark Skies Association.
Now, in January 2008, the problem has not been resolved, and is a lightning rod
issue for this year's Sedona City Council elections. Below is
a video by Sedona mayoral candidate, Matthew Turner, regarding his
view of lights along 89A (also includes his view on the City's use of regular herbicides).
