City of Sedona
grant provides unique mask-making opportunity
Sedona, AZ - Oct. 6, 2008 - The public is
invited on October 11th, from 10AM to 4:30PM, to
participate in part-one of a free community
mask-making event, which will be hosted by the
Sedona Public Library.
The project “Seeing
Through Our Eyes” is made possible by an emerging
artist grant presented by the City of
Sedona to Pash Galbavy of Sedona. The October
11th event will bring people together in the
morning to make plaster masks on each
participant’s face. A potluck lunch will follow.
The afternoon will be devoted to decorating the
masks.
“The masks will represent something related to
each maker and how they see themselves in the
context of our community,” Galbavy said. "No need
to be shy,” she added, “we are interested in
expressive art that focuses on meaning over
esthetics... We assure new mask makers that they
can do no wrong whatever form their creations
take.”
October 18th, from 10AM to 4:30PM the “Mask
Discovery” event will take place, also at the
library. Participants will bring their masks to
life through optional exercises including
writing, movement, acting, and sharing. A
potluck lunch is part of the afternoon.
November 1st from 6 to 8PM, the library will
host a “public offering.” “We don’t like the
word ‘performance’,” Galbavy says, “It conjures
up performance anxiety. This will be a chance to
share something authentic, reflective, and
creative about what we discovered during the
mask-making exploration.”

Galbavy has a Master’s in Communication. She is
an expressive performance artist and writer. She
teaches contact improvisation, expressive
movement, and mask-making. For the latter she
utilizes as-natural-as-possible ingredients
including 100% organic palm oil--instead of
petroleum jelly-- as a release agent. A
demonstration of her fast and easy technique can
be seen at
www.unmaskit.com. Masks will be displayed at
the library at dates to be determined.
Those interested in participation should call in
advance to reserve space as materials are
limited. (928) 284-4021
Events are free.
