Sedona, AZ - April 25, 2008 - It's that
time again! Twice a year, the Friends of Sedona
Library hold a massive book sale with loads of
great deals – one in the spring and on in the
fall. Well, the spring FOL Book Sale is at hand
and you shouldn't miss it. April 29th is the
official opening and it runs through May 8th.
The hours of the sale are the same as the
Library's hours.
You may not want to wait until the doors open on
the 29th to search for those bargains. If that
is the case, if you are a card-carrying member
of the Friends of the Library, you can get into
the preview sale on the evening of April 28th,
from 5:00 – 8:00 PM. Simply show that card at
the door and you will have first shot at the
deals that are sure to be inside.
Don't yet have a Friend of the Library
membership card? Come into the Library anytime
before the opening of the doors on the 28th and
become a Friend. Applications are available at
the front desk at the Library. Your contribution
supports the FOL and also gives you some "Get
Out of Jail" no overdue fines opportunities, the
Friends' newsletter and the warm feeling of
knowing you are supporting one of the oldest and
most effective support organizations in Sedona.
With summer close at hand, you will surely want
a selection of reading to take along on
vacation, or to just hunker down with during the
hottest part of the days. You'll find fiction,
nonfiction, coffee table type books, video and
audiotapes, DVD's and music CDs and children's
books. The selection of cook books is always
large and will offer you recipes to serve
throughout the year. The prices are good and the
quality is great. Don't miss this twice-a-year
chance to restock your bookshelves and help out
the Library. Mark your calendar!
Moving to another topic entirely, the great
weather inspires me and many others to head
outside and partake of one of a myriad sports
activities. The Sedona Public Library has many
books that will introduce you to a sport,
improve your game, recount the history of one of
our national pastimes or reveal little known
secrets that will amaze and shock you. If you
know the Dewey Decimal Classification system,
you can find these books in the 700s and the
Library has lots to offer. Check out the newest
titles on sports in the New Books section. Here
are a few titles that we have added to the
collection recently.
Baseball fans, and especially Arizona
Diamondbacks fans, take heed! Steven Travers has
written Diamondbacks Essential: Everything You
Need to Know to Be a Real Fan. It offers
stories, statistics, facts, figures, anecdotes,
trivia and more on our state's baseball team.
Their early success at the World Series hasn't
been repeated and the reasons may well be in
this book.
Every sport has its controversies, conspiracies,
and downright lousy scandals. If you can bear to
read this parade of bad behavior, pick up The 25
Greatest Sports Conspiracy Theories of All Time,
by Elliot Kalb. He writes about sports'
notorious fixes, cover-ups, and scandals. Trust
me, the baseball doping scandal is nothing new.
Its muckraking at its best!
Do you fish, especially fly fish? Try the new
book by Mark D. Williams, So Many Fish, So
Little Time. If offers information on "1,001 of
the world's greatest backcountry honeyholes,
trout rivers, blue ribbon waters, bass lakes and
saltwater hot spots. Being a fly fisher, myself,
I look at this book and think, "Retirement
plan!"
Not much of an outdoorsy type? Fancy a game of
billards? If you enjoy this game of skill that
doesn't require any aerobics, you can improve
your game with the tips and tricks in Gerry
Kanov and Shari Stauch's Precision Pool. You can
learn key skills, shots and strategies for eight
ball, nine ball, one pocket and straight pool.
Maybe you can even get a few free beers out of
those skills.
Please remember that with the FOL Book Sale, the
50th Anniversary Author Series will be held off
until May 16th when Arizona Grand Canyon artist
Bruce Aiken presents. Here are the particulars.
