Heartline Café is outstanding all the way around… with inside and outside seating, fabulous fare, fresh ingredients, and a sparklingly clean, charming, friendly and classy atmosphere. A wonderful place to share a meal, have coffee and desert, or order take out.

The Fireside room with its warm crackling fire and unlimited coffee/tea table was welcoming and homey. I sat near the fire and helped my self to a cup of coffee with handmade raw sugar cubes and cream... mmmm smooth, heady, creamy and sweet. The specials of the day, hand written on a brown paper bag (how fun!), looked scrumptious. And the regular menu selections were all enticing. I finally settled on a sandwich called the Torta Rustica. An Italian sandwich with Cappicola, salami, provolone, roasted red peppers & Tapenade on Ciabatta bread with a black pepper vinaigrette on the side… savory, smoky, piquant, crunchy and chewy a mouthwatering delight. For desert I chose a slice of Berry Torte… creamy, flaky, sweet and absolutely scrumptious. I must have died and gone to heaven!

Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner prices range from $4.50 to $14.75. I whole-heartedly recommend the Torta Rustica and Berry Torte. Awesome!

Hours: 7 days, 7am to 6pm.

Recipe… spicy, sweet, creamy and luscious.

Ginger, maple, walnut, pumpkin casserole

A delicious casserole I whipped up one evening. It’s great for holidays, special occasions or anytime and is very easy to prepare. It makes a great side or even a luscious desert.

2 cup canned pumpkin (or 2 cups fresh cooked pureed pumpkin)
1 cup evaporated milk
1/4 cup maple syrup
2 eggs
2 tablespoons melted butter
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
2 tablespoons chopped crystallized ginger
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Mix ginger, brown sugar, flour, baking powder, walnuts, salt and chopped ginger. In a separate bowl stir together pumpkin, evaporated milk, maple syrup, eggs and butter, then whisk in dry ingredients until well combined.

Spoon into a lightly greased 1 1/2 quart casserole dish. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour or until middle is set.

Serve hot as a side dish. Or as desert with a dollop of whipped cream on top. Outstanding!

And best of all it’s good for you too: Pumpkin contains about 40 calories per 1 cup serving and is high in Vitamin A (beta-carotene), C and Fiber. Beta-carotene helps reduce the risk of cancer, improves vision, skin and immune function as well as the development of strong bone and teeth. Vitamin C helps fight infection and fiber promotes proper digestion and elimination. Maple Syrup contains about 217 calories per ¼ cup and provides 100% of the recommended daily allowance of manganese, 37% of riboflavin, 18% of zinc, 7% of magnesium and 5% of calcium and potassium. Walnuts are high in Omega-3 and Omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids, they help reduce cholesterol levels and lower LDL’s as well as decrease the risk of heart attack and stroke. Eggs are high in protein and contain many vitamins and minerals, carotenoids, lutein and zeaxanthin, which may help prevent formation of cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. Eggs also contain choline that helps memory function. Ginger has medicinal properties including, anti-emetic, controls nausea and vomiting; prevents coronary artery disease, healing and prevention of both arthritic conditions and stomach ulcers. In addition, ginger has been shown to be effective against tumor growth, rheumatism, migraine and is an antioxidant.
