D’lish, a great name for this small, delightful spot with veggie food ‘to live (die) for.’

Impeccably fresh ingredients, friendly staff, counter ordering and outside seating. I enjoyed the food so much I’ve been back 6 times since September.

For lunch I ordered Soup & Salad… a fresh House Salad… grated sweet, earthy raw beets and carrots… green, astringent romaine, spicy hot radish sprouts and salty, crunchy sunflower seeds with a complex, creamy, mildly ginger dressing (my choice)… a wonderful combination; plus a nice chunk of slightly sweet, chewy Essene bread. One of 3 daily soups, my choice, Tom Ka, a Thai-style coconut soup… intensely flavored… creamy, smooth, bright and earthy, with hints of citrus and galangal (ginger) and a selection of toothy veggies. My body thanks me and my mouth is happily making yum noises.

My beverage of choice was also dessert… a Vanilla Date Shake… rich, thick, sweet and creamy, with banana overtones and a hint of date… with each mouthful I purred with delight.

Lunch or Dinner prices range from $7.25 to $12.95. I whole-heartedly recommend the Soup & Salad and Vanilla Date Shake!

Hours: 7 days, 11am - 8pm.

Recipe… a healthy, decadent and delightful dessert!

Food for the Gods (Baked Date Pudding)

This is one of my grandmother’s recipes that she always made during the holidays… and one of my favorites. It is moderately simple.

1 cup chopped dates
1 cup chopped walnuts
½ cup sugar
3 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tbs. flour (whole wheat pastry or all purpose)
¼ tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking powder

Grease 12” square pan or spray with non-stick cooking spray. Preheat oven to 325º.

Separate eggs. In a large mixer bowl beat yolks until thick and lemon-colored. Add sugar a little at a time and continue beating until mixture is fluffy. Add dates, nuts and vanilla. Slowly add flour (1 tbs.) sifted with salt and baking powder.

In separate clean, dry bowl with clean blades (or whisk), beat egg whites until stiff. Fold whites gently into yoke mixture. Gently spread batter in pan evenly.

Bake 20 minutes. Cool in pan. Cut into squares. Serve with a sprinkling of powdered sugar over the top or a dollop of fresh whipped cream and a great cup of coffee or tea. Rich, sweet and delicious.

You can make this into a bar by crumbling butter cookies adding some butter and spreading them over the bottom of the pan, then pouring the date mix over the top. Or even make it a pie with your favorite flakey crust.

This dessert is good for the body too… fresh dates contain vitamins A, B-complex and C are a good source of fiber, beta-carotene, lutein, and 20 different amino acids. They aid digestion, assimilation of carbohydrates and fatty acid content and help control blood sugar levels. They help lower the risk of cancer and heart diseases and strengthen the immune system. One date contains about 23 calories. The calorie vs. nutrition content make dates one of the best nutritional values. They are also high in tannin so used medicinally as a detersive (cleanser) and astringent for intestinal conditions; as well as administered for sore throat, colds, bronchial catarrh, and to lower fever.

Walnuts are high in Omega-3 and Omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids, they help reduce cholesterol levels and lower LDL’s as well as decrease the risk of heart attack and stroke.

Eggs are high in protein and contain many vitamins and minerals, carotenoids, lutein and zeaxanthin, which may help prevent formation of cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. Eggs also contain choline that helps memory function.

A Great Find…

Mount Hope Foods in Cottonwood

If you are looking for bulk foods, spices and herbs, Cottonwood has a great place with a wonderful selection. Mount Hope Foods Naturally has the best selection of bulk foods in the Verde Valley at reasonable prices. Now I buy all my spices in bulk then put them in the original containers. This summer I restocked my entire spice cabinet with fresh, over 30 different spices for around $9.00. They also carry a nice selection of nuts, dried fruits, dates, cereals, flour, beans, grains, salt, sugar and more. Less packaging is green – which is good for the environment.
