Dear Coach,
I am in a rut – with life and business! My friends, and professional
work, just don’t stimulate me any more. I’ve had the same friends
for years, and I know I’ve changed, but a lot of the people I hang
out with are still doing the same things they did twenty years ago.
I really want to attract some new friends, and maybe a new job, but
I’m dragging my feet because I don’t know what to do! How can I get
motivated to transform my life? - Itching for a change in Colorado
Dear Itching,
Wow! I can see a whole life makeover approaching, and… it also
sounds like you may have been watching The Secret. I’ve held many
“attraction” workshops throughout the past few years, and this
yearning for transformation and attracting change is a common theme.
As we grow along our path, our needs and wants may vary frequently.
But others in our life can be satisfied and happy with a lifestyle
that they have led for a long time and have no desire to modify
anything. When one starts thinking about making big life changes,
roadblocks can certainly jump into our path and hold us hostage for
long periods of time.
Sometimes it helps to gain clarity by writing things down. Let’s
start with an exercise that will give you insight into your present
situation. To begin with, think about, or write, answers to these
questions about the people in your life right now:
►What similarities are there in
all these men and women?
►Why did I originally attract
them?
►Do they still meet my needs and
desires as friends, or co-workers?
►Are they loving and respectful
and support me on this life’s journey?
►Is my overall environment one
that inspires me and makes me happy? If not, why?
The second part of this assignment is about attracting who, what and
how you desire in your life.
Think about the people and circumstances that you would like to be
surrounded with. What qualities do you want to be exhibited around
you – warmth, humor, nurturing, groundedness?
Make three columns on a large piece of paper. (I like to use LARGE
paper so that I don’t cramp my style. Easel paper is great for
this.)
| WHO I want to attract
|
WHAT I want to attract
|
HOW will I attract |
Be totally objective about “who” you want in your
life. The “what” may need clarity and focus work on its own. And the
“how” might involve some foundational work on your values and what
is most important in your life—before you move on to how you will
specifically attract what you desire.
When you get absolutely clear about what you desire your life to
look like, you will start
automatically attracting the circumstances and people to make it
materialize. However, this transitioning may take several months (or
longer) and dedication on your part. It is important to understand
that one must also take action to manifest what is desired!
Now, tape your “exercise paper” on the wall where you can see if
often and where it is available for you to make changes—and simply
to play with ideas. Ask yourself if changes are due, and if so, how
you want them to take place. Overall, this exercise is meant to give
you insight on how you want to alter your life to attract exactly
what and who you desire.
Experiment with your own “attraction plan of action”. Try it on
paper first, and if it makes sense to you, begin a strategy for
renovating your life. This turn in the path may be very challenging
for you, but you get to choose the life, and the people in it, that
bring you happiness.
Remember that there are therapists, counselors and coaches who can
give you support as you journey. You do not have to do this alone!
In my next column, I will address what makes people attractive to
others and some thoughts on how you can be a magnet, as you take
action, drawing the circumstances and people you desire into your
life. If you would like to explore an in-depth approach to your own
“Attraction Plan of Action”, please contact me! I am passionate
about your success!
